At Harmony Retreat & Animal Rescue, we’ve seen firsthand how the heartbreaking reality of domestic violence extends far beyond human victims. For many survivors, the thought of leaving an abusive situation is made even harder by the fear of abandoning a beloved pet. Too often, these animals—loyal companions who provide comfort and unconditional love—are left in danger because safe housing for both is so rare.

That’s why our Domestic Violence Safe Haven Program exists. When survivors reach out to us, we open our doors and our hearts—providing emergency shelter, veterinary care, food, and all the love their pets need while their owners find safety and stability. Recently, we took in a dog whose person had fled a situation that could not accommodate her dog. Without our program, that dog might have been surrendered to a shelter or worse. Instead, she’s receiving medical care, nutritious food, and gentle reassurance every day from her foster family.
